|WCLS Highlights of 2013|
As 2013 draws to an end, it’s appropriate to reflect on some of the major happenings at WCLS throughout the year.
January: Revised our borrowing policy so that children no longer have to pay fines for overdue children’s materials checked out on their accounts. Goal is to encourage more families to get library cards for their children.
February: Snow Falling on Cedars author David Guterson visited the Jansen Art Center in Lynden as part of Whatcom READS!
March: Friends of the Ferndale Library got out the vote for a Special Election ballot to raise bond funds necessary to qualify for a large matching gift; measure passes!
April: Hired a new Executive Director (me!). Whatcom County Library Foundation’s “Branch Out” fundraiser netted $14,000 in support of system-wide programs.
May: Completed our twenty-second successful state audit with no audit findings.
June: Began meeting jointly with the Bellingham Public Library management team to strengthen our commitment to work cooperatively.
July: Children, teens, and adults participated in Summer Reading programs countywide.
August: Interviewed candidates for the new South Whatcom Library Branch Manager position.
September: Held Ferndale Public Library Groundbreaking Ceremony.
October: Conducted bargaining sessions with our labor union which ultimately resulted in ratification of a five-year contract.
November: Celebrated the Gala Re-opening of the Island Library after an extensive remodeling project by the Friends of Island Library .
December: Friends of Point Roberts Library
Whew! It’s been a busy year, with much in store for the year ahead. Thank you for your continued support of the Whatcom County Library System. Wishing you a bright and happy new year!
