“I don’t usually read books like this, but I liked it!”   freshman, Windward High School

4 schools, 1 book and lots of readers.  Over 600 students read Skyship Academy: The Pearl Wars and after hearing the author speak at their school, many more kids were ready to pick up the book.  This was the 2nd year WCLS has hosted a Teen One Reads, a County–wide program where we provide 30 books to participating middle and high schools.  Everyone in the school community was encouraged to read the book, giving teachers, parents, school staff and teens the opportunity to share ideas and start conversations spurred by reading the same title.  Blaine Middle School, Windward HS,  Mt Baker JH and Horizon MS participated this year.

To cap off the Teen One Reads program, author Nick James visited each school, speaking at both all school assemblies and ran small group writing workshops.  From the pin-drop, focused attention the Blaine Middle School students gave Nick James during his 50 minute presentation, to the need for more books at Horizon,  Teen One Reads accomplished its goal to engage teens and adults alike.  Many thanks to the Whatcom County Library Foundation for their generous grant which makes this program possible!  --  Tamar Clarke
