|A New Public Library Opens! South Whatcom Library|
The New South Whatcom Library is now open! Located at the Sudden Valley Community Center, it may be the only active public library to operate out of a former horse barn!
The South Whatcom Library is not solely for the residents of Sudden Valley – it serves anyone in Whatcom County – particularly those who live along South Lake Whatcom, from the Geneva neighborhood to Glenhaven.
So what’s inside the big red barn? A modern library, complete with public internet workstations, Wi-Fi access, a large meeting room and a smaller conference room. There’s a colorful children’s area right up front, the perfect destination for active toddlers through school-age children. In the back corner, there’s a teen area, filled with hot teen reads, graphic novels, manga and more. There’s a great browsing collection of books, movies, magazines and music, comfy seats for reading and catching up with neighbors, and friendly staff to show you how to download eBooks to your eReader, place holds on library materials, or answer your reference questions.
The South Whatcom Library would not have come about without the tireless efforts of the Friends of the Sudden Valley Library, who raised the funds, drew up the plans, and built the library. Whatcom County Library System is also appreciative of the Sudden Valley Community Association, which leases the space to the Friends for its use as a library.
The photos you see here are from “Key Day” February 1, when the Friends of the Sudden Valley Library handed over the keys to the building, allowing WCLS to begin installing library materials and training staff.
To visit the South Whatcom Library, take Lake Whatcom Boulevard and turn into Gate 2, at the South end of the golf course. Follow Marigold Drive, and the signs to the library, taking a left onto Barn View Court. Go down the hill to the parking lot, and then walk to the middle barn. We hope to have a Grand Opening sometime in April. See you there!
