|Eyes on the Prize|
This month, our hats are off to the Pierce County Library System (PCLS) for receiving a 2013 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, one of only 10 libraries and museums recognized with this honor.
PCLS staff visited Washington, D.C., where First Lady Michelle Obama was on hand to present the medal, which acknowledges the library’s work in early literacy, community building, and developing partnerships.
Sound familiar? These concepts are all part of our own Strategic Framework, and many of the things Pierce County Library System does, we do here in Whatcom County, too. For example, we offer Play and Learn Storytimes featuring math, science and literacy toys. We educate parents and childcare providers with ways to promote pre-math skills. We partner with Bellingham Technical College and the Whatcom Literacy Council to prepare adults for the GED test. And, like PCLS, we offer books, audiobooks, eBooks, music CDs, DVDs, and more to a community that is becoming more culturally diverse.
Pierce County Library System touts “research-informed services” and “partner powered programs” as the secrets to their success. You can bet we’ll be studying their model, adding our Whatcom County twist, and working towards a medal of our own one day!
