Whatcom County Library System experienced a mix of highs and lows in 2014. We celebrated when the new South Whatcom Library opened, only to see it close a few months later when powder post beetles were discovered in the exterior building structure. On the purely positive side, we partnered with the City of Ferndale and the Whatcom Community Foundation to build and open the new Ferndale Public Library, launched a StoryWalk in Lynden, digitized historic photos in Deming, and celebrated as the Friends of the Point Roberts Library moved closer to their fundraising goals for a new library building.
County residents checked out nearly 1.9 items from 10 community libraries and the Bookmobile. During the almost 21,500 total open hours, staff presented over 2,200 programs and events ranging from Storytimes to Poetry Nights to book discussions. WCLS strengthened digital services by offering free music downloads via Freegal, welcoming 3D printers purchased by Friends of the Library groups, and providing a library app for mobile devices.
